Australian Government Appoints New Gambling Boss

AUSTRALIA – As reported by the (Australia) Herald Sun: "The Bracks Government will appoint a new gambling boss to mediate in the 10-year war of words between welfare groups and pokies kingpins.

"An Advocate for Responsible Gambling will be chosen in the coming months, the first in a series of reforms planned for the state's gaming watchdog.

"One of the major roles of the position will be to chair regular meetings between anti-pokies campaigners and poker machine industry stakeholders.

"The first meeting, which was chaired by Gaming Minister John Pandazopoulos and Community Services Minister Sherryl Garbutt, was held at State Parliament yesterday.

"It included representatives from Tattersall's, Tabcorp, Crown casino, the Australian Hotels Association, Clubs Victoria, Communities Against the Pokies Plague, the Salvation Army, the Victorian Local Governance Association, Gamblers' Help and the Interchurch Gambling Taskforce…"
