Australian Gambling Donations Capped19 March 2002AUSTRALIA – As reported by the Australian: "Political donations from gambling companies will be limited to $50,000 under laws to be introduced into the Victorian Parliament. "The cap comes after Labor was embarrassed by revelations that it accepted a $100,000 donation from a company owned by Crown casino investor Kerry Packer following its election win in 1999. "…`People or organisations that hold such licences will be prohibited from making donations to registered political parties totalling more than $50,000 in a financial year,' Attorney-General Rob Hulls said. "…The move to introduce public funding of Victorian elections brings the state into line with the commonwealth, Queensland, the ACT and NSW. "The proposed legislation also includes new disclosure laws on political donations that Mr Hulls said were among the toughest in the country…" |
