Australian Cricket Website Under Investigation26 May 2003AUSTRALIA – As reported by the Australian Advertiser: "The Department of Communications is examining an allegation that cricket's Baggy Green website linked to a site running an advertisement for an overseas internet gambling service. "The complainant claims the `home of Australian cricket' linked to another site that ran an advertisement for a British gaming site. "The Interactive Gambling Act 2001 makes it an offence to publish an advertisement for a gambling service in Australia. When The Australian visited Baggy Green yesterday it was linking to a page on UK cricketing news provider CricInfo.com that carried an advertisement for a service called Bet365. "…Bet365 is a British company that calls itself `one of the UK's leading betting and gaming groups'. "Department of Communications licensed broadcasting general manager Gordon Neil said the matter was being examined by the department's lawyers. "…Mr Neil said the department's lawyers would look at the nature of the advertisement, and would consider whether the site was aimed mainly at Australians. He said Baggy Green was closely integrated with the English cricket website…" |
