Australian Charity Calls for Reduction in Poker Machines

AUSTRALIA –August 24, 2001 –As reported by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation: "A prominent Adelaide charity has called on the state's political parties to support an annual reduction in the number of poker machines in South Australia.

"The Adelaide Central Mission says 1,000 machines need to be `clawed back' each year to address problem gambling.

"…Policy manager Mark Henley says with annual poker machines revenues higher than projected the Government can afford the measure.

"`We still think that the Government receives far too much income from gambling taxes as it is, and it's a very, very regressive tax,' he said…"
