Australian Casinos' Profits Increase Five Fold14 December 2000AUSTRALIA -- Dec. 14, 2000 --As reported by the Australian Associated Press: "Australian casinos increased their profits five-fold last financial year with an increase in overseas high-rollers and poker machine takings. "The Australian Bureau of Statistics says the country's 13 casinos had turned in total profits of $452 million in 1999-2000, up from $93 million the previous year. "Takings from gaming tables and poker machines both increased eight per cent, to $1.438 billion and $938 million respectively. "Overseas players gambled 47 per cent more and made up 37 per cent of the income from gaming tables, a total of $538 million -- 86 per cent from high-rollers..." |
