Australian Casinos get Asian Windfall

5 February 2001

AUSTRALIA – Feb. 5, 2001 –As reported by the Australian: "Big-spending high-rollers from Asia have helped boost the nation's casino industry to record profits as Australians' love of gambling also shows no sign of waning.

"…Gaming revenue climbed 8 per cent at Australia's 13 casinos to a record $2.39 billion in 1999-2000, part of a total $3 billion turnover, a survey by the Australian Casino Association found.

"…Casino revenue had quadrupled in Australia in the past decade. The ACA, however, said the value-added component to the community had increased by a similar amount.

"…Profits were boosted by a huge increase in revenue from international players, who lost $538 million last year, nearly a 50 per cent rise on the previous year.

"…Only last week a group of Asian high-rollers put nearly $10 million through Jupiters Casino on the Gold Coast.

"…But National Council of Social Service NSW director Gary Moore challenged the ACA to release a breakdown of gaming revenue. Mr Moore said he suspected it would show poker machines made up a large part of the increase…"
