Australian Casino Tightens Gambling Rules

AUSTRALIA – Nov. 24, 2000 – As reported by Australia Advertiser: "The new owners of the Adelaide Casino, Sky City Limited, have announced an overhaul of all gambling practices after a man complained that he lost a "substantial sum" of money while he was drunk.

"…Licensed venues are not allowed to serve intoxicated customers and Liquor Licensing Commissioner Bill Pryor told The Advertiser he was looking into the complaint.

"…Sky City communications manager Sonya Haggie said the Casino was co-operating fully with Mr Pryor and had supplied documentation to his office.

"No Pokies MLC Nick Xenophon defended the Casino operators but said laws covering the issue were inadequate and currently did not ban intoxicated people or mentally disabled people from losing large amounts of money.

"…A Private Members Bill introduced by Mr Xenophon in Parliament will be voted on next week seeking changes to the Casino Act 1997 and the Gaming Machine Act 1992 to ban drunk gamblers from Casinos…"
