Australian Casino Sets Sights Beyond War, Sickness

AUSTRALIA – As reported by the (Australia) Age: "The operator of Reef Casino in Cairns says it expects better trading conditions for the rest of the year as high rollers and tourists return after a SARS and Iraq war-induced downturn.

"…International visitor numbers to Cairns, in northern Queensland, dropped as a result of the Iraq war and severe acute respiratory syndrome, putting pressure on the revenue from table games, which are particularly popular with high rollers from Asia.

"But a strong domestic market, due in part to local promotions and special events, helped the casino increase visitor numbers by 4 per cent.

"Trust chairman Ben Macdonald said he was pleased with the results and expected conditions to improve in the months to December…"
