Australian Casino Guards Strike

16 June 2003

AUSTRALIA – As reported by the Australian Associated Press: “About 150 security guards walked off the job at Crown Casino last night over failed pay negotiations.

“Members of The Liquor Hospitality and Miscellaneous Workers Union (LHMU) will walk out again tonight for nine hours from 10pm in a bid to force Chubb Security to sit down and negotiate a better pay deal.

“LHMU spokesman Terry Breheny said Chubb Security, which employs the guards to police doors and entertainment venues within the casino, had made a final offer of 17 per cent over three years on Friday.

“Mr Breheny said his members wanted 19 per cent, improved annual leave and better pay for public holidays.

“`The security guards walked off the job last night from 10pm to 2am and I was told it was chaotic at the casino, and we expect the same situation tonight,’ he said.

“…But Crown Casino spokesman Gary O'Neil said the strike action had no affect on business at the casino or on patrons…”
