Australian Bookmaker Owed Big by Celebrities

AUSTRALIA – As reported by the Mercury: “Well-known bookmaker Simon Beasley is owed $1 million (US$664,185) by welshing punters including Melbourne Australian Rules footballers and other big names around town.

“Beasley has sent a file to the Melbourne Football Club detailing debts of more than $65,000 owed by young Demons Daniel Ward and Travis Johnstone.

“…`The problem I have with this business is I have debtors of about $1 million,’ he said.

“`These are some of the biggest names in Melbourne, people you think would be absolutely A-grade people to deal with but they let you down when it comes to payment time.’

“…Beasley said the Demon players were happy to line up for cash when their horses won.

“…`If some of these blokes got on a roll they could turn over $100,000 in an afternoon. They've done that with me.’

“…Beasley's plight aroused little sympathy from fellow bookmakers.

“One bookie, who declined to be named, said Beasley's strategy of giving credit to `risk’ punters to grow his business was a major talking point.

“Credit betting forms a huge percentage of business of rails bookies such as Beasley. Ernie Campagna estimated 75 per cent of his turnover was credit betting…”
