Australia Pushes for Systematic Approach to Problem Gambling

AUSTRALIA –July 27, 2001 --As reported by the Australian Broadcasting Company: "A Sydney-based counselling service wants a wider approach to reduce problem gambling in New South Wales.

"The State Government yesterday released a gambling reform package, including a cap on the total number of poker machines and an advertising ban outside clubs and hotels.

"The Wesley Gambling Counselling Service's Narelle Nicholson says the cap is a positive move as is the signage ban and the move to shut-down gaming operations in clubs and hotels for six hours a day.

"With Sydney's Star City Casino and the TAB excluded from the poker machine reforms, Ms Nicholson says there needs to be a more systematic and holistic approach to problem gambling.

"…The Shadow Gaming Minister, Rob Oakshott, says forcing clubs to reduce the number of machines will not make any difference…"
