Aussie Pokie Program Fails7 April 2003AUSTRALIA – As reported by the Herald Sun: ``A scheme to protect pokie addicts from gambling has failed and faces a major overhaul by the State Government. ``A government report has exposed serious weaknesses in the gambling industry's self-exclusion program. ``More than 3500 confessed problem gamblers have joined the program since its introduction in 1997, while another 300 of the state's gambling addicts use a similar program at Crown casino. ```The reporting of breaches of self-excluded persons is inconsistent and infrequent,' the report said. ```There are significant weaknesses in implementing the program as it now stands.' ``…The findings come 12 months after a Herald Sun investigation exposed 10 suburban pokies venues allowing a banned punter to gamble away his pay packet…" |
