Aussie Casinos hit Jackpot with a Record $3 Billion

5 February 2001

AUSTRAILIA – Feb. 7, 2001 -- As reported by the Sydney Morning Herald: Australia's casinos weathered the Asian slump and the Howard Government's antagonism towards them to report record revenue of more than $3 billion last financial year.

The Australian Casino Association said a survey of the performance of the nation's 13 casinos showed their revenue had increased by 9.2 per cent last financial year.

Casino gaming revenue had increased from about $500 million in 1990 to $2.4 billion last financial year, while tax revenue had more than trebled since 1993 to $478 million.

The Prime Minister, Mr Howard, has said there is too much gambling in Australia and that he is ashamed of the number of poker machines.

The survey says there are 10,825 electronic gaming machines in Australia, along with 1,119 gaming tables. But despite the surge in revenue there was a slight decline in total number of casino visitors, down by 3 per cent to 40 million.
