Aussie Casino Workers Postpone Stopwork on Passive Smoking

MELBOURNE, Australia – Dec. 8, 2001 – As reported by the Australian Associated Press: `` Workers at Melbourne's Crown Casino have postponed plans to shut down the casino tonight while they held a stopwork meeting about their push for a ban on smoking.

``The Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Workers' Union (LHMU) said the postponement came after the state government agreed to hold talks on Tuesday about a timetable for laws banning smoking in hospitality venues.

``…LHMU state secretary Brian Daley said the government today agreed to Tuesday's talks and the union believed it would announce a review of smoking laws and a timetable for new laws.

``He said Casino workers had become increasingly dissatisfied with a lack of action on passive smoking in their workplace.

" …He (Brian Daley) said that in the past two months hundreds of Victorian hospitality workers had begun signing a passive smoking registry which could lead to common law cases against employers who put them at risk from smoking's effects…"
