August Revenue for Mississippi Casinos Increases

JACKSON, Mississippi –– As reported by the Biloxi (Mississippi) Sun Herald: "The August casino revenue grew by 6 percent on the Coast and 3 percent along the Mississippi River over that of August 2000, according to the State Tax Commission.

"After a solid month to cap an otherwise sluggish summer, casino operators will likely suffer again in September because of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack that hog-tied air travel and kept other would-be gamblers at home watching television.

"…While the 6 percent gain was welcome news to casino operators, there's a flip side to the coin, said Steve Rosen, the executive vice president of marketing for Grand Casinos in Gulfport, Biloxi and Tunica, as well as Ballys in Tunica.

"`August was a pretty good month, but I'm not overly excited about it,' said Rosen. `I think every casino spent a lot more in marketing to get those revenues.'

"A number of Coast casinos gave away cars with other expensive jackpots and giveaways to lure visitors to salvage the tourist season that suffered because of the softening national economy.

"…The 12 Coast casinos brought in $103.8 million in gross revenue last month, while the 18 casinos along the Mississippi River earned $133.9 million…'
