Attempt to Halt South Dakota Video Lottery Fails

PIERRE, South Dakota – Jan. 31, 2001 –As reported by the Yankton Daily Press and Dakotan: "The latest attempt to throttle video lottery in South Dakota was easily smothered Tuesday in the state House.

"…Rep. Bill Napoli, R-Rapid City, led the charge against the gambling industry. Although voters refused to repeal the games in November, many people are fed up with video lottery and the social problems it causes, he said.

"…Voters favored video lottery by a margin of 54 percent to 46 percent in the general election.

"…HB1084 would allow video lottery businesses to be sold, but no more businesses could start and the number of machines could not increase beyond the current 8,000 or so, he said.

"…Opponents of the bill said local governments can already limit the number of places that have the gambling machines, and the Legislature should not interfere. They also said the Legislature should not hamper legitimate businesses…"
