Attacks Hurt New York Lottery Revenues20 October 2001NEW YORK – Oct. 20, 2001 –As reported by the Syracuse Post-Standard: " All it will take for New York to recover from Sept. 11 is $54 billion and a dream. "That's not to suggest the state lottery is the answer. In fact, Gov. George Pataki is telling Congress that the lottery is part of the state's problem. "…Pataki's budget office notes that the attacks immediately disconnected 1,572 lottery retailers, including 40 in the World Trade Center. The state estimated the loss from communications outages at $6.8 million. "In addition, the report takes into account a $1.2 million `loss from distracted players,' based on declines `associated with the consumers' short-term concentration on the incident and the longer-term psychological effect on sales. "`The distracted player loss effect is expected to decrease quickly' - by 30 percent each day - and then disappear by next month, the budget office reports…" |
