ATM Ban Bill Stalled as Attacks are Priority

WASHINGTON, D.C. –– As reported by the (California) Desert Sun: "Has a proposed ban on automatic teller machines in casinos made any progress in Congress?

"No. The bill, sponsored by Rep. John LaFalce, D-N.Y., had little chance of passing when it was introduced.

"The dramatic shift of priorities by lawmakers in the wake of terrorist attacks Sept. 11 virtually ensures the ban won't proceed.

"LaFalce introduced the bill in July. He said banning ATM and credit card access from casino floors would make it tougher for problem gamblers to burn through their assets.

"…Rusty Payne, a spokesman for Rep. Mary Bono, R-Palm Springs, said bills dealing with topics ranging from education to labeling produce by country of origin have been put on hold…"
