Atlantic City's Tropicana Launches Cash Grab Machine

24 May 2001

ATLANTIC CITY - After promising "a unique form of entertainment," Tropicana Casino and Resort won regulatory approval Wednesday for a cash-grab money machine called the Fortune Dome.

"Qualifying gamblers in Tropicana's new Fortune Dome Slots area will be taken eight feet above the casino floor and into a 12-foot-diamater sphere made of clear polycarbonate and structural aluminum.

"With the flip of a switch, money begins whirling throughout the giant ball while the gambler tries to snatch $25,000 in bills ranging from $1 to $100 out of the air with a net or pouch.

"…Tropicana hopes to open the $1 million dome to select customers on Friday and to the general public a week later, said George Mancuso, vice president of slot operations.

"Gamblers qualify for the cash grab by earning 160 tickets while playing any of the 156 slot machines in Fortune Dome Slots. Gamblers receive one ticket for every $25 wagered, meaning they must wager $4,000 to qualify.

"…The average cash grab is expected to net between $100 and $200, Mancuso said, emphasizing that officials will closely monitor the early results.

"…Inside the dome, gamblers will stand within a cylinder 42 inches high while fishing cash out of the air…"
