Atlantic City Minorities Stall in Low-Paying Casino Service Jobs

ATLANTIC CITY – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: ``Minorities in this region work largely in lower-paying service and retail jobs and have not moved up in the casino economy, newly released 2000 Census data show.

``A larger percentage of non-Hispanic whites work in professional and management jobs than do blacks and Hispanics, according to a Press of Atlantic City analysis of census information being released today.

``While 31 percent of area whites work in professional jobs, only 22 percent of blacks and 15 percent of Hispanics do in Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland and Ocean counties.

``In addition, whites are two to three times more likely to work in good-paying construction jobs than blacks in the region.

``…Forty-three percent of black men in the county work in service jobs…"
