Atlanta's Mega Millions Sales Up

16 July 2002

ATLANTA – As reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitutional: "The odds of winning are slightly worse than one in 135 million.

"So which would you rather own: a share of Enron stock or a $1 ticket to the Mega Millions lottery?

"With the Dow down and Wall Street under a cloud of scandal, suddenly long odds look better than no odds at all.

"Tickets sales for tonight's $165 million Mega Millions jackpot are well ahead of sales for the last big jackpot, the $331 million Big Game back in April.

"In the first seven weeks of that game, 18.8 million tickets were sold in Georgia, according to the state Lottery Corporation. In the first seven weeks of this Mega Million jackpot, 23.9 million tickets have been sold in the state.

"…In the first week of July, 4.5 million Mega Millions tickets were sold in Georgia, one of nine states that participate in the game that replaced the Big Game in May. Last week, sales hit 6.9 million.

"…It probably doesn't hurt that one of the last Big Game winners, first-time player and warehouse worker Erika Greene, was from the metro area…"
