At 9-5, Fusaichi Pegasus is Heavy Favorite in Kentucky Derby Saturday

5 May 2000

A field of 19 three-year-old colts will go postward tomorrow in the 126th Kentucky Derby -- the first jewel of thoroughbred horse racing's Triple Crown. This race (known as the "Run For The Roses") is the most wide-open in recent memory.

Here is the complete field of twenty with a race prediction at the end:

1. Globalize - Scratched.

2. (Saddle Cloth #4) - Anees - (20-1) -The two year old champion ran third to the favored Fusaichi Pegasus in the San Felipe Stakes and fourth to The Deputy in the Santa Anita Derby for his only starts this year. Has a chance but needs to improve.

3. (SC #5) - Aptitude - (20-1) - Has never run a bad race and has some chance. Can come from behind.

4. (SC #14) - Wheelaway - (30-1 [Field]) - Won the Tampa Bay Derby, third in the Blue Grass Stakes, but seems to lack the class to win at this level.

5. (SC #6) - Hal's Hope - (20-1) - Won the Florida Derby and has been trained like a horse who will try to go wire to wire.

6. (SC #1)- Trippi - (5-1 [Entry]) - Won the Flamingo Stakes in his last start, is four for four lifetime and is another who figures to set the pace. His class is suspect, though.

7. (SC #15) - Deputy Warlock - (30-1 [Field]) - The strongest closer in the race and quite possibly a decent longshot play.

8. (SC #7) - Captain Steve - (8-1) - This colt is liked by many who seem willing to overlook the fact he is winless at three and has never repeated his outstanding two year old form.

9. (SC #8) - War Chant - (6-1) - Has been favored in all four lifetime starts, of which he has won three. Adds blinkers for this. Is a stablemate of favored Fusaichi Pegasus.

10. (SC #9) - More Than Ready - (10-1 [Field]) - One of the best two year olds in the country last year, is just now finding himself at three and is a definite threat.

11. (SC #10) - The Deputy - (4-1) - Won the Santa Anita Derby in his last start, is 3 for 4 since coming to this country from Ireland, with his only loss coming by 3/4 of a length to Fusaichi Pegasus. Has the best chance to beat the favorite.

12. (SC #2) - China Visit - (50-1 [B-Entry]) - This is a colt of unknown quality. He has won both of his races - one in France and one in Dubai. Your guess is as good as mine.

13. (SC #1A) - Commendable - (5-1 [Entry]) - Has won one race in his life and looks to be just taking up space.

14. (SC #11) - Graeme Hall - (20-1) - Went wire-to-wire in winning the Arkansas Derby in his last start. His class is suspect.

15. (SC #1C) - Impeachment - (5-1 [Entry]) - Has won one race in his life and has been losing consistently to second raters. Hope he doesn't get in anyone's way.

16. (SC #12) - Fusaichi Pegasus - (9-5) - The favorite has completely dominated his opposition this year and will be very difficult to beat. Many think he is the best race horse since Secretariat.

17. (SC #13) - Exchange Rate - (30-1) - His last race was terrible; has trained horribly for the Derby and looks like a hopeless case.

18. (SC #1X) - High Yield - (5-1 [Entry]) - This very consistent three year old has been 1-2-3 in 11 of 12 lifetime starts, is the top money earner in the field with $1,170,196 next to his name but is severely compromised by his post position. Speed horse pay a definite price breaking from the outside at Churchill Downs.

19. (SC #2B) - Curule - (50-1 [B Entry]) - Absolutely nothing to recommend him.

20. (SC #16) - Ronton - (30-1 [Field]) - Breaks from the far outside and hopefully won't get in anyone's way. His chances to win are somewhere between slim and none.

Predicted Results:
1. Fusaichi Pegasus
2. The Deputy
3. Aptitude
4. War Chant
