Arrests in Hong Kong Football Gambling Raids28 May 2001HONG KONG –- As reported by the BBC: ``Forty people have been arrested in Hong Kong, suspected of being involved in illegal gambling on football matches. ``The police carried out raids across the territory and recovered betting slips worth over half a million dollars. ``The operation was carried out in the run-up to the European Champions League football final on Wednesday. ``The only legal forms of gambling in the territory are bets made through the Hong Kong Jockey Club on horse races, plus a public lottery. ``The territory's government is now considering legalising betting on football matches. |
