Arizona, Tribes Ready to Gamble9 January 2003ARIZONA – As reported by the Eastern Arizona Courier: "The cards are on the table, the Indian gaming compacts have been signed and Proposition 202 is in full effect. "…The compacts require tribes to share from 1 to 8 percent of their revenues, based on their gross net win, with the state. "…According to a press release from the governor's office, the state estimates it will received $89 million during the first full year of revenue sharing, and more than $1 billion in the first 10 years. Hull called the compact a `win for all of Arizona.' "Revenue will go to support education, trauma centers and local communities, and to fund the prevention and treatment of problem gambling. "…The 53-page compact outlines negotiations between the state and tribes that seek to enter into tribal-state compacts for conducting Class 3 gaming. It provides for the allocations of criminal and civil jurisdiction between the state and the tribe necessary for enforcement of laws and regulations. "It also sets forth the types of permitted games, establishes technical standards for machines, entitles the state to inspect casinos and requires background investigations and licensing of casino employees…" |
