Arizona Tribe Increases Slot Count

ARIZONA – As reported by the Arizona Republic: “The Gila River Indian Community will increase its slot machine count by 34 percent. It is acquiring rights to 475 slots from the Zuni tribe of Arizona and New Mexico in a deal announced Tuesday.

“The Gila tribe is the last Phoenix-area casino operator to expand under the provisions of Proposition 202, which voters narrowly passed last fall. The measure allows non-gambling tribes like the Zuni to sell their slot rights to gambling tribes to spread gambling proceeds beyond tribes with casinos.

“The Gila tribe will pay the Zuni in quarterly payments stretching over the 23-year life of the tribal-state gambling agreements crafted under Proposition 202, tribal officials said.

“…The Zuni transfer will give the Gila tribe 1,875 slots among its three casinos: Wild Horse Pass, Vee Quiva and Lone Butte. The Gila tribe currently has 1,400 slots, second only to the 1,466 spread between the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community's two casinos…”
