Arizona Shuffleboarders Claim $95 Million Lotto Prize

PHOENIX, Arizona – Jan. 29, 2002 -– As reported by Reuters: "Six close friends from a Phoenix suburb who play shuffleboard together claimed a $95.3 million, multi-state lottery jackpot Monday, officials said.

"The six winners from Mesa, Arizona, were all smiles when they turned in the single-winning ticket for Saturday's Powerball drawing at lottery headquarters in Phoenix only a few hours after the offices opened, said Kevan Kaighn, a lottery spokeswoman.

"The three men and three women chose to take the payout in a lump sum, meaning each winner will receive about $5.2 million after taxes.

"…The group all said they plan to quit their jobs and possibly take a cruise together. They also said they will continue to buy lottery tickets.

"Officials said the six winners had been buying 20 of the $1 tickets together each week for more than a year before striking it rich…"
