Arizona Senate Panel OKs Hull Gaming Plan; Racetrack Plan Killed17 April 2002ARIZONA -- As reported by the Arizona Republic: ``A bill to renew Indian-gaming compacts along the terms negotiated by Gov. Jane Hull won a preliminary victory today, while a competing bill to give racetracks casino-style games was killed. ``The actions by the Senate Government Committee set the stage for a vote, as early as next week, by the full Senate. They also force the racetracks to regroup in their quest for a slice of Arizona's casino-gambling action. ``Senate Bill 1001 was approved on a 4-1 vote, but it was not a complete success for the governor. It included three technical amendments, and the governor has asked lawmakers to pass her bill without any changes. ``...The committee killed SCR 1001, Senate President Randall Gnant's measure to permit new Indian gaming compacts while dealing the racetracks the right to operate slot machines..." |
