Arizona Not Closing Indian Casinos Despite Court Ruling

PHOENIX, Arizona –– As reported by the Associated Press: "Despite a court ruling, a key Arizona official says the state won't shut down any Indian casinos.

"`This is only about future (state-tribal gaming) compacts and not existing compacts,' Arizona Attorney General Janet Napolitano said Thursday. `And at this point, there is no order from the court to enforce (the ruling).'

"…U.S. District Judge Robert C. Broomfield ruled on Tuesday that Arizona's 19 Indian casinos are illegal because state law does not allow slot machines, keno or blackjack.

"In a lawsuit brought by three Phoenix-area race tracks, he also ruled that the governor doesn't have the authority to negotiate gambling compacts with tribes because the Legislature hasn't delegated its authority…"
