Arizona Initiative Aims to Consolidate Slots

28 January 2002

PHOENIX, Arizona – Jan. 28, 2002 -- A ballot initiative from a Parker, Arizona, Indian tribe could have the effect of turning rural tribes into powerful brokers, who could sell their slot allowances to tribes closer to big cities.

However, no other tribe in the state has voiced support for the plan from the Colorado River Indian Tribes, also known as CRIT.

Arizona law caps the number of slot machines in the state at 14,675, but the CRIT compact would raise that ceiling to 21,000. It would give more leverage to struggling rural casinos by allowing them to deal away their slot rations to tribes with multiple casinos.
