Arizona Governor Vows to Appeal Injunction Against Indian Gaming15 August 2001ARIZONA – August 15, 2001 – As reported by the Arizona Republic: "The long-anticipated injunction Tuesday from U.S. District Judge Robert Broomfield also bars the governor from signing new compacts. But it leaves open the possibility that future Indian gaming could be legalized by the Arizona Legislature or by a statewide initiative. "But Hull's promise to appeal means the case is heading for a probable yearlong wait at the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco. "Tuesday's ruling signals a temporary victory for three Arizona racetracks, which filed suit to stop new compacts from being signed. "They also asked for the `notice of non-renewal,' which signals the inevitable end to the current gambling deal between 15 Indian tribes and the state…" |
