Arizona Governor to Sign Gambling Compacts

4 December 2002

PHOENIX, Arizona – As reported by the Associated Press: "Gov. Jane Hull was expected to sign gambling agreements today with at least 10 tribes.

"The compacts contain terms that could allay fears race- and dog-track operators had about proceeds from racing simulcasts.

"Racing industry officials worried the final language negotiated in the agreements crafted under voter-approved Proposition 202 could allow Indian casinos to receive out-of-state racing simulcasts directly.

"…The new compacts allow the casinos more slot machines and the introduction of Las Vegas style blackjack, plus continued off-track pari-mutuel wagering on horse and dog racing.

"…It's critical to maintain current racing standards in the new agreements, said Neil Wake, a lawyer for the tracks…"
