Arizona Gaming Campaign Makes History

ARIZONA – As reported by the Arizona Republic: "Arizona's Indian gaming campaign is the highest-rolling measure in state history, racking up more than $32.1 million in contributions and $25.1 million in spending, according to reports filed Thursday with the secretary of state.

"The money obliterates the previous record for most-pricey ballot issue, the $5.7 million spent in 2000 on a campaign over urban growth boundaries.

"The gaming money flows almost exclusively from the parties that would benefit from each of the three initiatives: Indian tribes and racetracks.

"Leading the pack at $18.9 million raised is Proposition 202, which is sponsored by 17 Indian tribes.

"The money comes from 13 of the 14 tribes that run casinos in Arizona, with a few minor contributions from non-tribal donors…"
