Arizona Gambling Initiative Cost $21.2 Million

ARIZONA – As reported by the Arizona Republic: "It was wonderful to see Proposition 202, the 17-tribe Indian gambling initiative, pass last month but it came with an unfortunately high price, a tribal leader said this week.

"A $21.1 million price tag, to be exact, according to campaign finance reports released Thursday.

"…Voters on Nov. 5 narrowly passed the proposition, which will allow more slot machines and the introduction of Nevada-style blackjack at Indian casinos.

"…The campaign finance records show that $10.3 million was spent on Proposition 200, backed by the Colorado River Indian Tribes, and $7.6 million was spent on Proposition 201, the horse- and dog-racing industry's push to add slots for their tracks.

"Both lost big.

"All three propositions combined for at least $39 million in spending - a state elections record…"
