Arizona Casinos Impact Nevada Casinos

ARIZONA – As reported by the Arizona Republic: "Blackjack at Arizona Indian casinos could be hurting the hand of casinos in Laughlin, Nev., data released Wednesday by Nevada indicate.

"Gambling revenue in Laughlin, which gets 24 percent of its visitors from Arizona and whose casinos employ more than 10,000 Arizonans, fell 0.6 percent, to $42.4 million, in June from June 2002, the Nevada Gaming Control Board reported. It was the fourth decline in five months since Arizona introduced Nevada-style blackjack and more slot machines in February.

"…The most noticeable change was in the table-game sector. Overall table-game revenue fell 4.3 percent from the same six months in 2002 and blackjack revenue fell 8.1 percent.

"Is this a trend? Industry observers say it's too early to know. After all, the first six months of 2003 were buffeted by a slow economy, war in Iraq and other factors that made analysis tricky…"
