Anti-Casino Group Forms in Eastern Connecticut15 July 2002WOODSTOCK, Connecticut – As reported by the Associated Press: "The combined federal recognition of two more Indian tribes and concerns about the development of more Indian casinos in the state has prompted the formation of an anti-casinos citizens group. "Connecticut already has two casinos, the Mohegan-run Mohegan Sun, and Foxwoods Resort Casino, run by the Mashantucket Pequots. "`Those two tribes have set a terrible precedent. We don't want to be known as the Las Vegas of the east. The problem is that, with tribal recognition comes casinos,' said Mary Beth Gorke-Felice, chairwoman of Connecticut Citizens Against Casinos. "…The group says it's not against recognition, but against casinos, which it says threaten the quality of life in rural areas…" |
