Another Winning Month in Nevada

13 December 2002

CARSON CITY, Nevada – As reported by the Associated Press: "Nevada casinos won $807.4 million from gamblers during October for a 4.6 percent increase over the same month a year ago - the third straight positive month for the clubs.

"But Gov. Kenny Guinn said Thursday the win report from the state Gaming Control Board also shows gambling tax collections so far this fiscal year are nearly $18 million behind projections.

"The state's tax collections from the casino industry totalled $48.1 million for October, up 8.4 percent; and $234.7 million for the fiscal year to date, up 2.5 percent over the same period in 2001.

"…The Control Board's Frank Streshley said the October win report showed double-digit gains for Las Vegas Strip resorts - but the Reno-Sparks area slumped and remains `one of the weakest markets in the state.'

"…The October win figures for southern Nevada shows the Las Vegas Strip was up 10.4 percent, downtown Las Vegas was down 1.9 percent, Laughlin was up 4.1 percent and Mesquite was up 8.3 percent.

"Boulder Strip resorts were up 8.9 percent and North Las Vegas clubs were down 1.8 percent.

"In northern Nevada, casinos in Washoe County were down 4.7 percent. That included Reno resorts, down 5 percent; and Sparks casinos which were down 3.4 percent.

"Casinos on Tahoe's south shore were up 1.3 percent, and casinos on the lake's north shore were down 23.6 percent."
