Another California Tribal Casino Proposed

CALIFORNIA -- As reported by the Reno Gazette-Journal: "Another American-Indian tribe is planning to build a casino in northern California, this one off Highway 49 in Amador County — a drive-in feeder market for South Lake Tahoe.

"The Ione Band of Miwok Indians, with 500 members but no established tribal home, is trying to purchase land in the town of Plymouth to develop a casino.

"Tribe officials are in talks with Gov. Gray Davis' office to establish a formal gaming compact with the state, California officials confirmed.

"According to the Stockton Record, during a Tuesday meeting of the Plymouth City Council, the Ione Band was expected to reveal its plans, including where a hotel or other facilities would be placed in the town of about 1,000 people.

"...The Ione Band could face more difficulties than tribes with ancestral homes recognized by the federal government. It must first secure the land in trust, a process that involves the federal government, before a casino license is considered..."
