American Quarter Horse Racing Purse and Handle are Growing5 April 2001UNITED STATES –(Press Release) --April 5, 2001 - Fueled by the new winter race meet at Los Alamitos Race Course and continued growth at Delta Downs and Sunland Park, the American Quarter Horse Association announced that American Quarter Horse racing purse and handle figures continue to show dramatic increases in 2001. The total amount wagered on American Quarter Horse races in March reached $20,097,593, a 154-percent increase over the figure of $7,888,689 bet in March 2000. A total of $3,459,323 was paid in purses in March, an increase of nearly 36-percent over the $2,550,451 doled out in March 2000. Los Alamitos Race Course, located in Southern California, is holding its first 47-day winter meeting for American Quarter Horses currently. Through the 281-races run through today, Los Alamitos has paid out more than $3 million in purses and generated nearly $13 million in handle. Delta Downs, located in Vinton, Louisiana, drew more than $14 million in handle on the 153 races it has held this year. Sunland Park's handle reached $5,669,828 on the 244 American Quarter Horse races it has run in 2001. In Mexico City, the Hipodromo de las Americas has 57 races to its name with nearly $1 million being wagered on those races. |
