Alliance Gaming Secures Rights to Popeye for Thrillions System11 January 2001LAS VEGAS, Nevada – Jan. 11, 2001 -- Alliance Gaming Corp. (Nasdaq: ALLY - news) announced today that it has secured the rights to the Popeye character for a new Thrillions wide-area progressive video slot game for its Bally Gaming and Systems unit. Alliance and King Features Syndicate have entered into a long-term agreement that gives Alliance rights to create a series of new Popeye games for initial release in New Jersey, California and other Native American markets. The contract with King Features follows similar agreements that produced the highly popular Betty Boop progressive games and the current launch of the Blondie progressive slots. Securing the Popeye license allows Bally Gaming to build on its strategy of offering fun and entertaining games with classic American icons that appeal to the traditional slot-playing demographic segments. ``Our commitment has been to unveil a video slot on our Thrillions progressive system by the fourth quarter of the current fiscal year and we're very pleased we will have a themed game that capitalizes on the instant recognition and universal appeal of Popeye,'' said Robert Miodunski, President and Chief Operating Officer of Alliance Gaming. One of the most popular characters in history, Popeye was initially introduced to the public in 1929. Along with characters such as Olive Oyl, Bluto, Wimpy and Brutus, the Popeye series has inspired countless hours of television programming, feature films and endorsement deals throughout the world on products ranging from designer handbags to Popeye's favorite meal of spinach. |
