All-time Gambling Low for Miss World Contest

UNITED KINGDOM-- Nov. 30, 2000 -- As reported by Ananova: "Gamblers are snubbing this year's Miss World contest, say bookmakers William Hill.

"Bets on the annual beauty pageant, being held tomorrow at the Millennium Dome, have plummeted to an all-time low of £2,570, a far cry from the mid-1970s, William Hill said, when takings in the region of £250,000 were the norm.

"...`To put these figures into perspective we took £500,000 in bets for the recent US presidential election and the FA Cup usually takes about the same amount of money. [said Serena Momberg, spokesperson for William Hill.]

"But British odds to win are not good, with 14-1 being given for Miss England, Michelle Walker, Miss Northern Ireland, Julie Watson, and Miss Wales, Sophia-Kate Cahill. Odds on Miss Scotland, Michelle Watson, stand at 20-1.

"Miss India, Priyanka Chopra, favourite at 9-2, is tipped to take the crown again this year from the current champion, Yukta Mookhey, from Bombay..."
