Alberta Likely Won't Get VLTs1 November 2002ALBERTA – As reported by the Edmonton Sun: "Alberta's five-year standoff over video lottery terminals now appears more likely to end in a win for foes of the machines. "The Supreme Court of Canada yesterday dismissed a Manitoba appeal that sharply parallels a court fight here over whether VLTs can be banned from communities. "…Alberta wants to enforce a voter-supported ban on VLTs in eight communities. But they've been tied up in court by bar owners who claim the government has no right to take away the machines, even after voters said they wanted them gone in plebiscites that took place as far back as 1997.
