Alberta Court Showdown Over VLTs Set to Begin27 April 2003EDMONTON, Canada – As reported by CTV: " A long-awaited court showdown on whether the Alberta government can pull video lottery terminals out of communities where residents voted in plebiscites to remove them is set to begin Monday. ``The government is fighting bar owners over a voter-supported ban on VLTs in eight communities -- Lacombe, Canmore, Coaldale, Lethbridge County, Stony Plain and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, which includes Fort McMurray and the Municipal District of Opportunity. ``…If the Alberta Court of Queen's Bench upholds the province's VLT law, the machines could finally be on their way out, after a string of plebiscites held years ago. ``Residents of Wood Buffalo voted to get rid of them in 1997 but a series of court challenges by bar owners kept them in place. Dissent grew louder the following year as bar owners from other communities, which had also voted to nix VLTs, joined the chorus…" |
