Alaska village withdraws gaming application6 July 2007EKLUTNA, Alaska -- As reported by the Alaska Star: "The Native Village of Eklutna withdrew a request made to the National Indian Gaming Commission in April for recognition of village land as Indian Country and for a Class II gaming permit. "In a June 25 letter prepared by attorney Marissa Flannery, the village requested the withdrawal and indicated plans to submit an alternate permit request in the future. "Flannery said the withdrawal was necessary to make changes to the initial ordinance. "...Flannery confirmed that when the village resubmits the ordinance that they will still be seeking a Class II permit. "...In addition to the gaming permit, the village is also seeking recognition of an 8.5-acre parcel of land owned by a member of the village near the Birchwood Airport as Indian Country..." |
