Aiming Local

25 July 2001

Ladbrokes is preparing itself for the change in the British tax laws in October by expanding its staff. The group plans to recruit over 1000 new staff members to serve in their 1900 shops across the UK. They’re expecting an influx as soon as the government abolishes the 9 pence betting tax. A Ladbrokes spokesman explained: "There will be a lot of people that used to bet by telephone through offshore centers such as Gibraltar who will come back to the UK. And a lot of people will bet more." Anticipating major growth, the group has laid out plans to open 40 superstores countrywide, as part of their two-year plan to invest £40 million in their betting shops.
