African Cops Close Down Illegal Casinos5 June 2001AFRICA – June 5, 2001 –As reported by iafrica.com: "A special police unit, set up to fight illegal gambling in KwaZulu-Natal, has shut down 111 illicit operations since it was established in August last year. "The unit has also seized more than 30 tons of gambling tokens. "Provincial Safety and Security MEC Nyanga Ngubane told journalists in Durban this morning that 108 people had been charged in terms of the Organised Crime Act and had paid admission of guilt fines totalling more than R1,8-million. "The team confiscated 1 873 gambling machines and R107 000 in cash earnings from illegal gambling operations in the province…" |
