AFL Players, Officials Face Gambling Fine

AUSTRALIA – As reported by the (Australia) Sun Herald: "Players and officials face fines of at least AUD$100,000 (US$60,430) under an AFL crackdown on gambling.

"Footballers, umpires and AFL or club officials found gambling on games in which they are involved face massive fines after an overhaul of the AFL's gambling policy to be released today.

"…But the amount of the fine will be greater if the player bets on a game involving his own club.

"Players and officials will also be fined the same large amounts if they pass on information to punters or bookmakers.

"…An education campaign focusing on young players is central to the gambling campaign following a sweeping review of existing AFL policy.

"The revised policy follows recommendations stemming from a review by the NSW Institute of Gambling Research in Canberra…"
