Advisory Vote Set on Indian Casino Complex

5 August 2004

KENOSHA, Wis. -- Voters in Kenosha County will be asked in November's election of their opinions on Menominee Nation's proposal to develop an $808 million casino complex at the Dairyland Greyhound Park.

The Kenosha County Board voted 15-12 Tuesday to place the referendum on the ballot. The referendum will be nonbinding, giving city and county officials the authority to make the ultimate decision on whether to pursue negotiations with the Indian tribe.

Supervisor Terry Rose, who proposed the resolution, said placing the 223-acre Dairyland property in tribal trust means permanently transferring the land to another sovereign nation.

"That's a decision that I think the people of the entire community need to make," he said.
