Accused Casino Embezzler Found in Mexico

MEXICO – Jan. 29, 2002 –As reported by the Associated Press: "A casino security guard who spent nearly half a year on the lam after allegedly walking away with $148,500 in cash has been arrested in Mexico, Reno police said on Monday.

"Muriel Rucker, 39, was found in Chula Vista, southeast of Guadalajara, on Saturday and was returned to the United States. Arrangements were being made to extradite her to Reno.

"…Police said surveillance cameras at the Club Cal Neva-Virginian Hotel Casino showed Rucker picking up two metal boxes packed with $148,500 in cash from the main cashier cage just past midnight Aug. 3 and wheeling them out along her normal route to the casinos vault.

"Along the way, investigator said she stepped outside with the money and handed it off to a friend, who police suspect was [her accomplice, Lanie] Stovall.

"…The theft was discovered about an hour later when a vault employee called the cashier to find out where the money was.

"Rucker began working at the casino in January after passing background checks by Reno police and a private investigation firm despite a series of felony arrests for drugs and a vehicle burglary in the 1990s…"
