A New Era Begins in New Mexico

23 February 1999

Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino, a property of Powerhouse Technologies, Inc., just became the first facility to open under the state of New Mexico's new gaming machine program, which allows gaming machines at pari-mutuel facilities and fraternal organizations throughout the state.

The casino opened Monday with 175 machines, and will likely be operating with the full 300 machines within one month. The facility is open seven days a week.

"The casino opening fulfills one of Powerhouse's major growth goals," said Powerhouse President and CEO Richard M. Haddrill. "We expect the casino to generate earnings growth while showcasing the state of New Mexico's horse racing product and our gaming machines."

Powerhouse spent $8.5 million renovating the 40-year old racetrack for the new, 11,500 square foot casino addition. The company refurbished the restaurant and lounge areas, added a new snack bar, and remodeled the grandstand. Exterior improvements include a new, well-lit parking area, new exterior lighting and landscaping, and a spacious driveway.
