79-Year Old Swindled out of Life Savings in Lottery Scam

LOS ANGELES, California – Nov. 18, 2000 – As reported by Associated Press: "A couple that swindled a 79-year old out of her life savings of more than $60,000 back in August in a lottery scam remain at large, a sheriff's investigator said Thursday.

"The Hispanic pair told the woman that they had won $1 million in the California Lottery, but couldn't redeem the winning ticket because they were in the country illegally, said Detective Thomas Wilson of the Industry Sheriff's Station.

"…`They convinced her to buy the ticket from them,' Wilson said in a broadcast report. `She fell for it, went to her bank, where she withdrew her life savings to buy the lottery ticket.'

"…The man is about 40 to 45, 6 feet 1 inches tall, 190 pounds, with brown hair and eyes. The woman is about 30 to 40, 5 feet 3 inches tall, 110 pounds, with brown hair and eyes. They drove a gray, '70s-model, two-door van…"
